Things I like

On our recent trip to NYC and Washington DC I took the opportunity of photography being allowed in the larger art galleries and museums to take photos of the exhibits and items that really caught my eye.

Over the last three months I have been trying to extract the features out of each that appeal to me and produce some stitched sample and drawings from them.

There are three sketchbooks worth of this and I am fast running out of space on this blog to post everything so here are some highlights.

Bute

DH and I spent Easter Weekend in Argyll, this allowed him to take photos and me to try to do some more drawing. After my previous work with crayons I was keen to carry this on in this project.

On reviewing this work it appears again that I have focused on repetition and lines. I have also tried to work with more colours in this work and feel I have achieved that.

Below is the work made while in Argyll and on return from photos.

Colour – Part Two

Last year I started to work through the exercises in Colour: A workshop for artists and designers (Hornung, D., 2nd Edition, 2012, LaurenceKing, London). As I noted at the time I would like to finish the exercises I had chosen at some point. Well that point has arrived.

Below are the final pieces of work for this project.

I enjoyed working through these. I hope to take the ideas on ‘Retinal Painting’ forward in to my own work – there is no need to try to paint everything.

Gouache I still find quite tricky to work with. Having several brands in use at once didn’t help as they are all of different thicknesses and pigment concentration. This meant that different amounts of water had to be added to each to get a uniform consistency, this did not however give uniform colour depth. Something to remember for the future.
